In a state where nearly one-million residents are considered at-risk for problem gambling, thousands of family households have been impacted by the harms associated with unhealthy gambling behavior. While any one of the verified symptoms of problem gambling can impact a close family member of a habitual gambler, the following are distinct to those in share a home with one:

  • Family members of problem gamblers report feeling emotionally neglected.
  • Family members (including children) of problem gamblers have higher rates of emotional abuse compared to those without.
  • Family members (including children) of problem gamblers have higher rates of physical abuse compared to those without.
  • Families of problem gamblers face a higher risk of household debt when one or more household income earners have a gambling problem.
  • Family households of problem gamblers are broken apart due to higher rates of separation and divorce when one or both parents are problem gamblers.
  • Younger family members have a higher risk of developing problematic gambling behavior, when a parent, guardian, or older sibling has a gambling problem. This occurs, in-part, through the process of observational learning.
